United Irishmen

April 1797 Michael Dwyer joined The United Irishmen.
Michael Dwyer fought in the battles of Arklow,Vinegar Hill and Newtownbarry (Bunclody).
Michael Dwyer led the United Irishmen in the battle of Hacketstown.
14,000 United Irishmen in Wicklow in 1798.     [The rebels were treated badly before the rebellion.Many leaders were arrested and some were executed. Many of their weapons were taken by the British soldiers.The rebels had little chance against the well trained and well  equipped soldiers].
More rebels were killed than Yeomen (British Army)

This man was called this because he could hang people from his back.His name was Hempenstall 'the walking gallows'.

People were half -hanged to get information.

Michael Dwyer became known as the ''Governor of Glenmalure'.While in charge Michael Dwyer used to have meetings in some safe houses in Glenmalure.This picture is of the house at Kellystown owned by the O'Toole family which was  used by Michael Dwyer.

This  is Michael Dwyer's chair.  It is a big rock on the side of the mountain. He used to look down on the British soldiers in the barrack in Glenmalure from here..
