The age most people started working in the mines was 16 or 17. The miners were paid £8 a week and sometimes got together for a drink afterwards. They worked from 4am to 12pm. Once in their spare time they helped Sir William Wilde to reconstruct a church in 1873. The first phase of mining in Glendalough ended in 1890.
The fiddlers row was a row of small houses that are all now in ruins on the way up to the mines in Glendasan. It was a row made up of 8 houses. Stakems and Kavanaghs were 2 families that lived there. There was a fiddler in each house.
The first football team in Glendalough was made up of miners.

They also had a band.

They had a tug-of-war team called the Tunnel Tigers.
