| To get to the mines people would go either walking or on a bicycle. Inside the mine one man could pull 1 wagon and pit ponies could pull 4 wagons of ore. Look at out picture at the top and you will see a pit pony, a very small pony that was used to pull the wagons of ore out of the mines. The miners had to walk into the mines but sometimes they got a lift on the empty wagon as it was going down to the mine to get the ore. Lanterns were used to light the passages so that miners could find their way. Lorries were used to carry lead around the mining village. All the transport that the miners used was slow. Lorries could hold much more than pit ponies, nearly double of what they carried. |
