The Farm

In the morning I got up and got dressed and went to school. When I got to school We got on the bus.It took a long time to get there.we passed fields, trees and houses. When we got there we saw two horses called Silver[a pure white horse]and Tonto [a white horse with black patches]. Then we saw a brown Camel and a white and grey fluffy Llama [which reminds me of a donkey with no mane]. Then I saw a sheepdog which had a very loud bark like this BARK  and after that we saw geese eggs, goose eggs, a hens egg and a cows teeth and the hens themselves. Next we saw cows and calves. After that we saw some woolly sheep and their lambs. Next we saw two male goats and even a cute little pig which was pale pink. Last we saw the cows being milked and how the milk was kept cold. When that was over we finally  got on the bus and came back to school.

This is Sammy showing us how to milk the cows.

Cows are milked in the dairy. They are milked twice a day. The farmer washes their teats and puts the cluster on to them. The cluster sucks out the milk and it goes into the jar. When the jar is full, the farmer turns a knob and the milk goes to the bank to cool. Cows eat lots of grass. Some cows are not milked but they look after their calves. Most calves are sold for meat when they are big.

Hens

Hens are kept to give us eggs. Hens lay one egg nearly every day in summer time. They don't lay so many in the winter because it is cold and dark. Hens eat hen food and scraps of bread and vegetables. They love worms. They pick up their food with their beaks. Some hens will sit on their eggs for three weeks. After that the eggs hatch out into chicks. You have to have a cock with your hens to have chicks.

Sheep

Sheep are mammals, an adult female sheep is called a ewe. An adult male sheep is called a Ram. In the spring the ewe gets fatter and has baby sheep which are called lambs. Lambs are usually born in Spring. For the first few weeks of the lamb's life it drinks milk from the ewe. Sometimes the ewe dies after the lamb is born so the farmer will either feed it himself or give it to another ewe this is called fostering. Lambs are very playful. Lambs can be white or black and they can have long tails. Sheep grow a woolly coat. This is called a fleece. In the summer the sheep have their wool shorn off. The fleece is wound and packed into a wool pack. Then it is sold to be made into knitting wool or cloth. A group is called a flock.

Tractors

A tractor is a piece of machinery. It is used on the farm. It is also used to bring away loads of gravel. A tractor is used for pulling trailers, ploughing ,cutting silage, making hay and sowing seeds. Some tractors are four wheel drive, this means that they pull with all four wheels and some are two wheel drive. Some of them have frontloaders and some have backloaders. They have hitches and lifts to attach the machinery.
